Jeep Rolls Over, Injuring Driver

A Waterford man has been hospitalized after a rollover crash. 33-year-old Ryan Meagher was driving his Jeep Wrangler south on Route 9 in Livingston at around 10 am on July 30. While driving, he dropped the cigarette he was smoking, causing him to become distracted from focusing on the road. Subsequently, the Jeep left the roadway, veered onto a grassy embankment, flipped, and caused Meagher to become injured. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his back and leg. Fortunately, no other cars were involved in the accident.

While often raised as an issue in conjunction with cell phone or electronics use, distracted driving has been causing accidents for as long as cars have been on the road. There are three main types of driving distractions:

  • Cognitive: thinking about things other than the road, such as work or a recent fight with a loved one
  • Manual: handling things other than the wheel of your car, such as trying to grab something from a bag or passenger seat, eating food, or applying makeup
  • Visual: looking at something other than the road ahead, such as a passenger or GPS or phone screen

Texting while driving is an especially dangerous distraction, since it encompasses all three of these types of distraction at once, taking even more attention away from driving. However, as is demonstrated here, even simple analog distractions can have serious consequences. Driving can become rote, and you may be tempted to try to multitask while on the road, but in doing so, you may be taking serious risks.
