Tractor Trailer Crushes Car in Accident on Route 17K

A recent vehicle accident in the Orange County town of Newburgh resulted in traffic being tied up for some 90 minutes. Two vehicles were attempting to exit the Pilot Travel Center located along Route 17K: a tractor trailer driven by Thomas Acker of Michigan, and a four-door sedan driven by Rosemary Scolaro of the hamlet of Wallkill. Both vehicles were planning to turn right. Acker swung his trailer wide to the left to make the turn, and, while swinging back to the right to make the turn, ended up with his trailer on top of Scolaro’s sedan, to his right side. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the accident, and no citations were issued by police. However, a special tow truck was required to lift Acker’s trailer off of Scolaro’s sedan.

Even where no one has been deemed criminally liable in an accident, crashes involving tractor-trailers and semi trucks can involve serious damage to a smaller passenger vehicle. A semi carrying a full load can weigh over 80,000 pounds, which is 25 times more than a normal passenger vehicle. When driving around a semi or tractor-trailer, be cognizant of your visibility to that driver. Their blind spots are large, especially in their rear passenger-side area. If you cannot see the mirrors on a tractor-trailer, the driver cannot see you. Ensure that you allow a semi a wide radius for making turns, and allow them extra time to come to a complete stop.

Accidents involving tractor trailers can involve a great deal of property damage and can require more complex investigations into liability than the average accident involving two passenger vehicles. If you’re in an accident with a tractor-trailer or semi truck, there is a serious chance that your car experienced a severe amount of damage, or that your injuries were serious and will require additional compensation to ensure you’re made whole after the crash.
