What to Do After a Motorcycle Accident

Two Happy People on a Motorcycle
|

As a motorcycle rider, safety is always your number one priority. Unfortunately, each time you hit the open road on two wheels, there’s an inherent risk of being involved in an accident – no matter how experienced a rider you may be. That’s why with Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month upon us, Basch & Keegan LLP is here to help you reduce the chances of being hurt or worse in the event of an unexpected collision. Keep reading for some tips from our legal professionals, who specialize in representing motorcycle accident victims, and remember that on the road or off, Basch & Keegan LLP always has your back.

Tip #1: Watch Out for Dangerous Conditions

Every good driver should strive to be aware of their surroundings at all times. Yet the sad reality is that many people hold a prejudice against motorcyclists, believing them to be reckless and/or unsafe, and do not look out for them the way they should as a result. What’s more, some people actually use this prejudice as an excuse to treat motorcycle riders worse than other motorists.

As unfortunate as this reality is, it also makes it incumbent on motorcyclists to be extra aware of hazards out there. Maintaining a sensible following distance from other vehicles, allowing ample time to react in case of sudden changes in traffic patterns, and anticipating the behavior of fellow drivers are basic practices that any seasoned rider already knows. However, it’s unexpected hazards motorcyclists really need to watch out for– especially if they’re on the road with drivers who are inexperienced or unattentive.

Some of the most dangerous hazards for motorcycle riders include:

  • Dead animals and other debris
  • Torn-up pavement, potholes, and gravel
  • Faulty traffic signals
  • Construction zone issues
  • Poorly designed roads
  • Flooded roads
  • Faulty or missing lights on other vehicles
  • Missing barriers/guardrails
  • Faded lines between lanes
  • Poor weather conditions (rain, snow, fog, etc.)

Tip #2: Get Help ASAP

If you have been injured in an accident, seeing medical attention right away can make all the difference. Obviously, you will usually know you are hurt if you have been in a serious accident. Yet there are many other instances where you may get in a minor accident, and are seemingly just a little banged up, but should still seek medical attention. The reality is that with motorcycle accidents, and all accidents for that matter, it’s not just the immediate injuries that cause pain and suffering, it’s the hidden ones that linger.

If you have been in a motorcycle accident, make sure to seek medical attention right away if you experience:

  • Back/neck pain
  • Joint pain
  • Stomach pain
  • Cuts, scrapes, and bruises
  • Headaches/nausea/dizziness

Even if you have been in an accident and experienced none of the symptoms mentioned above, it’s still not a bad idea to see a doctor. In a worst-case scenario, you could experience something like internal bleeding, which may not manifest in ways you are familiar with following an accident.

Tip #3: Know When to Hire an Attorney

Hiring a lawyer immediately after a crash is important. Basch & Keegan is here to help after a motorcycle accident.

Remember that motorcycle prejudice we discussed above? Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop at other motorists. Witnesses, insurance companies, medical practitioners, and even some lawyers believe that motorcycles are inherently unsafe. As such, many bike riders are denied full coverage following an accident. That’s why it’s always a good idea to do some research if you have been involved in a crash, seeking out a law firm with proven experience representing motorcycle riders, who will not hold your choice to ride a bike against you. An experienced motorcycle attorney will be able to detect any prejudices on the part of the legal system and insurance companies early on, and fight to dispel preconceived notions so that you receive the compensation you deserve.
