Intersection Site of Two Accidents in One Day

One Rhinebeck intersection was the site of two separate car accidents on Wednesday, July 15, and at least four people involved required hospitalization. The accidents occurred at the intersection of state Route 9G, Kalina Drive, and state Route 199 in the Dutchess County town. The first incident occurred at 2:14 p.m., when the Rhinebeck Fire Department received reports of a collision between a passenger van and a pickup truck. Three of the individuals in the van, including a child, were taken to Poughkeepsie’s Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for their injuries.

The second accident, involving two cars, occurred at around 4:45 p.m. Jake Cardillo, 25, of Clinton Corners, was traveling north on Route 9G when he turned left onto Route 199. According to witnesses, Cardillo failed to yield the right of way to a car traveling south on Route 9G, driven by John Hudock, 24, of Staatsburg. Authorities reported that both drivers were injured in that crash, but no information was available on the severity of their injuries.

The intersection in question, a major intersection, leads up to the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge. The accidents caused backup of traffic for some time after the crash, especially the latter accident. While it may simply have been a coincidence that the two accidents occurred at the same intersection in a single day, the victims of these accidents may want to investigate whether the intersection is excessively dangerous to drivers. If the municipality either installed a defective traffic signal, or was aware that the intersection was dangerous and failed to take corrective measures to make the intersection safe, perhaps by making traffic signals, stop signs, or pedestrian cross walks more visible, then the municipality could be held responsible for damages experienced by the victims of the accidents.
